Opening of new airport and terminal at Labuan Bajo, Flores (September 2014)

After several years of construction, the airstrip at the Labuan Bajo airport has been greatly expanded and a new terminal has been built. These constructions were necessary to accommodate the burgeoning levels of tourists visiting Labuan Bajo en route to the Komodo Islands. The terminal was opened in-part in September 2014. Mission visit: Trevor and Tina Lambkin (20-26 February 2014)

The priority for this visit was to transport dental supplies (tooth pastes and brushes) and kitchen items from Australia to the mission.  In addition to this we made our regular shopping visits to supermarkets in Labuan Bajo to stock up the larder of the monastery.  Rice and sugar were also purchased.  Dental supplies are provided on an on-going basis to the children Continue reading “Mission visit: Trevor and Tina Lambkin (20-26 February 2014)”

Christmas celebration with the children of Labuan Bajo (December 2013)

“This Christmas we had a very successful Christmas tree. The children were really happy and had plenty of fun and of course enough gifts. Our gifts this year were kindly supplied by Chris and MaryAnn Argall of Brisbane. You can imagine what joy these generous gifts contributed to these many kids. The celebration had its own problems. We had rain on that same day, the rain started at 9 am and went nonstop until 2 30pm. We had prepared a simple tent made of bamboo and tarpaulin. Mission visit: Chris and MaryAnn Argall, and Louis Lamuri of Brisbane (November 2013)

In November this year we visited the Missionaries of the Poor community in Labuan Bajo, on the island of Flores, Indonesia.  We carried with us medical supplies, bibles, and personal and office supplies for the brothers.  Holy Spirit Northside Private Hospital have generously donated all medical supplies to the mission since 2011. Mission visit: Peter and Sue Hill and family (September 2013)

We are Peter and Sue Hill from Culburra Beach, New South Wales and we were very happy to visit the Indonesian mission of the Missionaries of the Poor at Labuan Bajo, Flores.  We travelled with seven of our nine children and after spending a night at Kuta in Denpasar, Bali, we were told that our flight had been cancelled.  Continue reading “Mission visit: Peter and Sue Hill and family (September 2013)”

Official opening and blessing of the monastery (July 2013)

The official opening and blessing for the completion of the first wing of the monastery was held on the 17 July 2013. There were approximately 500 invited guests including the Bishop and Vicar of the local diocese (Ruteng), Msgr Hubertus Leteng PR, and Fr Benedictus Bensi PR respectively. First wing of the monastery completed (June 2013)

The first wing of the monastery was completed in May this year. This initial stage is double story; the ground floor comprises of an entry, interim chapel, office, dining room, and outdoor and indoor kitchens. Progress in the building of the monastery at Labuan Bajo (April 2013)

After completion of the fence in April 2012, the footings for the monastery were laid in the following month. Because of the monsoonal climate it was aimed to complete the roof prior to the start of the 2012/13 wet season which can commence anytime between November and January.
