After several years of construction, the airstrip at the Labuan Bajo airport has been greatly expanded and a new terminal has been built. These constructions were necessary to accommodate the burgeoning levels of tourists visiting Labuan Bajo en route to the Komodo Islands. The terminal was opened in-part in September 2014. In addition, the expansion of the airstrip has allowed larger aeroplanes to land and as a result Garuda is now servicing Labuan Bajo with daily flights. Despite the increased tourism in the town, paradoxically overall poverty and job prospects for locals have not greatly improved.
