In early December 2012 four of us visited the MOP mission in Labuan Bajo. Our grandson, Alexander joined us and witnessed the poverty of the town and connected well with the local children. He really saw how children, his age, live in a third world region. In addition, Janine McDonnell, also a supporter from Brisbane visited the mission to help out. For this visit we took what was equivalent to eight suitcases of supplies, which included several good quality garden tools and many home-made clothing for the children as early Christmas gifts. What was a unique experience was seeing the local brothers making a Nativity scene with crib from old flour sacks, bamboo and palm fronds. They also made some wonderful decorations, and a large star that they hung high over their road. We saw very good progress in the building of the monastery, and the English class and feeding program for the local children had greatly expanded. It was a wonderful experience for Janine and Alexander to witness poverty first hand and the corporal and spiritual works of the brothers in assisting the poor and disenfranchised.
This website is our personal journal dedicated to the brothers of the Missionaries of the Poor in Flores and Timor Leste who established missions in Labuan Bajo, Flores in 2010 and in Saburai, Timor Leste in 2015. The website aims to show Labuan Bajo and Saburai and their people, and the brothers’ work and mission in assisting the many impoverished people of Flores and Timor Leste.
